MP3 is a technology that virtually every modern computer user has used or has at least heard about. It is the most popular form of audio encoding, producing small yet high-quality audio files that can be easily transmitted over the internet or distributed on portable media like cdrom-s or USB drives. But not everyone knows about MP4, which, as its name suggests, is the successor to and improvement over MP3.

If you thought portable multimedia players were only good for music, you need to think again. For nowadays it seems like audio isn't enough. People want visuals too. Audio players are old-fashioned. What you need is a video player that you can carry with you to work, to the park, on the bus, to the rail station, the pub or coffee shop, and even on short flights. Now wherever you go, your favorite collection of movies will always be with you. Yes, I'm talking about MP4 players, the revolutionary new crop of gadgets for carrying and streaming media, a technology that finally makes it possible to distribute paid video online quickly and painlessly.
MP4 uses high-quality, intensively researched codecs to achieve great compression while retaining video quality, which can be as high as the quality experienced in DVD movies. So though the screen of the average portable MP4 player is quite small, usually between 1.5 inches and 2.5 inches diagonally, the high resolution and color capacity, combined with the enviable quality of most well-encoded MP4 videos, ensures that you shall have a satisfactory personal video-watching experience.

In order to be successful, an MP4 player must achieve the right balance between portability and functionality. You need to have all the features that make it an enjoyable experience to watch video on it, yet if it becomes too bloated in terms of size or weight it will no longer be useful as a portable multimedia companion. The average MP4 player has a disk capacity to hold around four to six full length movies, and enough battery to allow you to play video non-stop for more than a couple of hours. Yet they are small and light enough to be carried around easily in your pocket or handbag, or hung from a chain around your neck.

AVING Global News Network managed to snatch up their usual handful of snapshots and while there is no mention of any internal storage of any kind (I sure hope there is something in there), we do know that you can use SD and MMC cards to stash your photos, music (MP3 and WMA, as well as DRM10), and MP4 videos. If you get tired of your own collection, you can always flip over to the imbedded FM radio to catch up with the local deejays.

China's television bellwether Konka announced lately its partnership with Digicel...

China's television bellwether Konka announced lately its partnership with Digicel. Digicel will sell Konka's wide range of cutting?Cedge advanced GSM mobile handsets across Digicel's 20 Caribbean markets.
Digicel is the first overseas partner for Konka and the relationship marks the Chinese company's entrance into the Caribbean market, one of the highest mobile growth regions in the world, states a press release, states a press release.

With a total population of 40 million, conservative estimates expect the Caribbean market for mobile communications to reach a subscriber base of 17.1 million, a 47 percent increase from its current position of 11.6 million, according to EMC World Cellular Database.

Digicel and Konka will work together to market a range of cutting?Cedge handsets at competitive prices including the 'exclusive to Digicel' offer of the popular D163 slim phone with MP3/MP4 playback and 1.3 pixel camera with flash and 4X digital zoom.

The Konka D163 was released in China in March 2006 and Digicel expects to introduce this model to its Caribbean markets this summer as well as launching an exciting new portfolio in 2006. The relationship with Konka began prior to December 2005 with the sale of their two signature models the EC001 and the C926.

"We have been very impressed by the quality of the handsets and the response from our customers across our markets particularly in Haiti, Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean," said David Hall, CEO of Digicel Jamaica. "Konka is a quality brand, and we are looking forward to a mutually beneficial relationship, where we can offer our customers exclusive handsets at an even greater range of prices to match their financial resources."

Konka's full range of Digicel handsets will be showcased at the Jamaica Reggae Sunfest in Montego Bay, Jamaica in July. Konka is partnering with Digicel in sponsoring the festival this year and both companies will mark the occasion with the launch of a new handset model to the Jamaica mobile market.

Konka Group Company Ltd. is a global consumer electronics manufacturer and among China's 100 largest enterprises and a leading domestic brand. China ranks No. 1 worldwide in the production of televisions, video cameras, VCR players, telephones, electronic watches, calculators, refrigerators, and air conditioners, among other electronics. In addition to holding 25 per cent of the Chinese TV market, Konka estimates its brand will represent 10 percent of China's handset share in 2006 and the number one mobile phone provider in the market.

With over USD 1 billion invested in the Caribbean, Digicel is the largest GSM operator in the region and one of the most admired and leading brands. With its recent launch in Haiti in May 2006, Digicel sees tremendous potential growth for Konka phones given the Country's low cellular penetration estimated at 3.4 percent of the population. The company's distribution partner in the Caribbean is Jamaica?Cbased Facey Telecom Solutions.

Konka Group was founded on May 21, 1980. Konka Group is China's first Sino-foreign joint electronic maker. In August 1991, Konka was restructured into a Sino-foreign public share- hold company, and on March 27, 1992, the company's A-share and B-share come onto market in Shenzhen Stock Exchange.

Lloyds TSB will be handing out free Apple iPods to prospective university students from today as the annual battle to grab a share of the crucial student account market gets under way...

Lloyds TSB will be handing out free Apple iPods to prospective university students from today as the annual battle to grab a share of the crucial student account market gets under way.HSBC is offering an "MP4" music and video player or 10 free CDs, while the leader in the student market, NatWest, is hoping to lure teenagers with a five-year railcard worth £100. Barclays, a one-time pariah on campuses because of its apartheid-era South Africa banking operations, is the only one of the big four to steer clear of freebies, focusing on an interest-free overdraft deal instead.

The battle to obtain a share of the student market is vital for the banks because of the remarkable inertia among customers. About two-thirds of accounts opened by students stay with the bank for life and are widely seen as the most lucrative segment of retail banking.

Every year students are told not to be lured by the freebies on offer, but with most banks offering similar overdraft deals, the advice is routinely disregarded. Halifax and Abbey steadfastly refuse to play the freebie game - and have won a steadfastly small share of the market.

Lloyds TSB is offering the best interest-free overdraft deal, with students able to run up a £1,500 debt without charges during a three-year degree. NatWest starts with a £1,250 interest-free overdraft in the first year, rising to £1,600 after three years and £1,800 if the course is five years.

The banks are also competing on low-interest loans. Barclays will allow students to extend overdrafts to £3,000 at a rate of 8.9%, while HSBC offers loans at 7.8%.

It's a far cry from the 1980s, when Midland Bank (later to become HSBC) offered just three blank cassette tapes.
